Gandalf, Gollum, Aragorn, and more beloved characters from the Lord Of The Rings and The Hobbit franchises could return to the big screen again as Embracer Group acquires the rights to the films.

A statement released said alongside other upcoming Lord of the Rings projects such as Amazon’s The Rings of Power and The War of the Rohirrim anime film, it’s also eager to explore movie tie-ins for some well-known characters.

‘Other opportunities include exploring additional movies based on iconic characters such as Gandalf, Aragorn, Gollum, Galadriel, Eowyn, and other characters from the literary works of J.R.R. Tolkien,’ Embracer wrote.

They also added that they will continue to provide ‘new opportunities for fans to explore’ the worlds of the books and films through merchandising and other experiences.

The purchase was a part of six acquisitions by Embracer Group totaling 6 billion Swedish krona (approximately £4.7 million).

The Saul Zaentz Company announced its intentions to sell Middle-earth Enterprises earlier this year, with Amazon rumoured to be the front-runner to buy them.

Owning Middle-earth Enterprises gives Embracer the worldwide rights to motion pictures, video games, board games, merchandising, theme parks, and stage productions relating to the literary works of J.R.R. Tolkien.

The purchase comes ahead of the premiere of Amazon’s Rings of Power series on September 2.

The series, set thousands of years before the events of the world-renowned The Hobbit and The Lord Of The Rings books, will follow the events of the Second Age and the forging of the famous rings.

The series boasts an all-star cast, including Sir Lenny Henry, Cynthia Addai-Robinson, Robert Aramayo and Maxim Baldry.

The Lord Of The Rings: The Rings Of Power begins on Amazon Prime on September 2.
