Mark Wright has spoken out on the impact of a ‘devastating’ injury he suffered in the lead-up to last year’s London Marathon, in which he was set to compete.

The former The Only Way Is Essex star often shares posts about his love of fitness online, and is routinely spotted training in the gym.

But despite his love of working out, he was hit with a major knockback last year while training for the London Marathon

Mark suffered from a tear in his calf muscle, he was forced to pull out of the event, which he had been ‘really looking forward to’.

However, he’s now shared how the impact of the injury has stayed with him, and he has ‘nerves’ about something similar happening ‘every time’ he trains.

‘At the time, it was devastating,’ he began. ‘I had done quite a bit of training and I was really looking forward to it and I went on the day and saw the atmosphere.’

Mark admitted there were still positives to be found, despite picking up the injury, and knew he ‘wouldn’t have been able’ to run at the pace he wanted.

He added to The Mirror: ‘I am nervous about getting injured every time I go out for a run or when I do a session.’

However, the former Strictly finalist shared how he now takes extra care of himself to ensure he stays fit.

’I’ve just got to keep my fingers crossed, keep working hard, keep the recovery, the ice baths etc,’ he noted.

Mark, 35, has opened up about his health struggles in the past, after he had a 12cm tumour he had removed from his armpit in December 2021.

It was later determined to be non-cancerous, but he has since revealed that he has been left with ongoing side effects from his surgery as the lump was in a delicate area with many nerve endings.

He told fans on Instagram at the time: ‘I discovered a lump in my breast/armpit area. Not very big, but enough to cause concern and to be cautious enough to get it checked.

‘After some time the lump grew and began to bother me. I am someone who when it comes to life in general, leave no stone unturned. When it involves health, this idiom quadruples.’
