House of the Dragon star Emma D’Arcy admitted they had never seen Game of Thrones before and thought the upcoming prequel was just ‘some spoof version.

The 30-year-old actor, who’s playing Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen in the fantasy drama which also stars Matt Smith, Olivia CookeRhys Ifans and Paddy Considine.

It’s been three years since the divisive season 8 finale of the original show aired, however Emma didn’t realise the extent of its phenomenon.

Reflecting on her House of the Dragon audition, she said: ‘Everyone else managed to work it out; I remained very naïve. Everyone’s making fantasy series these days, so I just thought it was some spoof version.’

‘I didn’t realise until I was asked to send in another audition tape,’ they added to iNews.

Emma also shared that if they had ‘personal investment, to the multi-award-winning serial drama they wouldn’t have ‘held my nerve honestly.’

Reflecting on their character in a new interview, Emma who identifies as non-binary and uses they/them pronouns, says the character of the tough, dragon-riding daughter of the king felt ‘truthful’ to their own identity.

‘I’ve always found myself both pulled and repelled by masculine and feminine identity and I think that plays out truthfully here,’ she told the Hollywood Reporter.

Emma’s character Rhaenyra is the first-born child and therefore, traditionally, the natural successor to the Iron Throne.

The eagerly anticipated Game of Thrones prequel will see fans transported back to Westeros for the first time since the acclaimed HBO series came to an end in 2019.

Set 200 years before the original series, House of the Dragon centres on the brutal civil war between Targaryen claimants to the infamous Iron Throne.

The prequel will be the first in a number of planned spin-off series to arrive from HBO – including one focused on Jon Snow – offering a deeper dive into the history and mythology of Martin’s creation.

House Of The Dragon premieres on Sky Atlantic and NOW on Monday August 22.
