Kerry Katona had an interesting take on Anthony Joshua’s impassioned speech after his boxing defeat.

The former heavyweight champion challenged Ukraine’s Oleksandr Usyk in a second fight in bid to reclaim his titles following his first defeat last September.

However, Joshua, 32, failed to takedown his rival and suffered another crushing defeat at the fight in Saudi Arabia on Saturday. Frustrated with the result, Joshua threw Usyk’s titles out of the ring and stormed off, before returning to deliver an emotionally-charged rant.

Many have shared their thoughts on Joshua’s behaviour with celebrities such as Piers Morgan and Mo Gilligan among those to weigh in so far, but others like former Atomic Kittens singer Kerry couldn’t help but find comic relief in the controversy.

Reacting to the events of fight night, the 41-year-old wrote in her Instagram stories: ‘AJ’s speech at the end of his boxing match tops my This Morning interview.’

Kerry was of course referring to her infamous interview on ITV’s This Morning in 2008, where she slurred her words while chatting to Phillip Schofield and Fern Britton, sparking speculation she was under the influence of alcohol.

However, she later clarified that she was on medication for her bipolar disorder which impacted her speech.

The former pop star recently reflected on the interview, which was dubbed ‘car crash TV’, and criticised Phillip and Fern for not questioning her about her mental health.

‘It was pure bipolar medication. It was just awful. I was suicidal. I wanted to die, I wanted to kill myself. It was everywhere,’ she said on the Marnie’s Home Truths podcast in 2021.

‘Never once did they say to me, “Oh, oh right – what’s bipolar and what’s the medication you’re taking?” I didn’t get any of that.’

Joshua addressed his ring meltdown at a post-fight press conference last night, and broke down into tears while explaining: ‘When you’re trying to do things from the heart and everyone is just not understanding. It was just from the heart. I was mad at myself. Not anyone else just myself.’

He later stated: ‘I was just so upset.’

After taking the microphone, Joshua had earlier said in the ring: ‘I ain’t no amateur boxer from five years old that was an elite prospect from my youth [like Usyk]. I was going to jail, I got bail, and I started training my arse off – because if I got sentenced, I wanted to be able to fight.’

He added: ‘This guy [Usyk], to beat me tonight – maybe I could have done better – but it shows the levels of hard work he must have put in so please give him a round of applause for our heavyweight champion of the world.’

Uncensored host Piers criticised Joshua for losing his cool and tweeted: ‘Embarrassing antics at the end by Joshua.

‘He was beaten by a superior fighter who put on a magnificent performance of highly-skilled, supremely resilient boxing. Congrats @usykaa – a great champion & the pride of his nation. Moral of tonight: Ukrainians are hard as nails.’

However, Danny Cipriani defended the boxer and commented: ‘Danny Cipriani had a different view, tweeting: ‘Everyone is asking for AJ to show more emotion. Show his true self. Less of the media trained answers. He is growing and living in the ‘spotlight’ – let’s have some perspective.

‘He spoke highly about Usyk in an emotional state. Fair play to him.’
