Comedian Peter Kay made a rare public appearance this weekend at the Dance for Life show in Liverpool – all in aid of Cancer Research UK.

The Bolton stand-up comic and TV writer, 49, wore a sweatband and a golden, vinyl-decorated tracksuit as he delighted fans at the M&S Bank Arena on Friday night.

The Phoenix Nights creator and star stepped away from the limelight in 2017 for personal reasons and has only made sporadic appearances in public since then.

At the time, he cited family circumstances for his hiatus. The Car Share writer then began to re-appear in front of the cameras again during 2020’s Covid lockdown.

He then made a live public return in 2021, appearing into two Q&A sessions at Manchester’s O2 Apollo to help raise money for a student’s cancer treatment.

And the event in Liverpool this weeked, Peter looked to be in good spirits, grooving to several routines and supported by groups of backing dancers.

Fans took to social media to express their delight at seeing the beloved comedian on such good form after a professional hiatus of five years.

‘Been at Dance for Life in Liverpool tonight. Peter Kay just brings joy,’ one attendee wrote on Twitter, who was happy to see the comedian’s return.

‘Peter Kay’s Dance for Life [was] one of the best nights of my life, I’m howling,’ another person posted to the social media website.

Rumours have been circling that Kay is planning to return to the comedy circuit in the near future, with former co-stars giving credence to the stories.

A source told The Sun that ‘Peter has lined up huge venues across the country including in Manchester, London and Birmingham and is hoping to announce it in September.’

Fellow comedian Jason Manford appeared to confirm the rumours when he told a Dublin radio station: ‘[Peter is] hopefully back himself soon, doing stand-up, so keep your eye out for his tour.’

Kay last performed a full stand-up tour in 2011, with the Tour That Doesn’t Tour Tour, playing 98 dates in England, 14 in Ireland, and five each in Scotland and Wales.
