Johnny Depp is set to make a surprise appearance at the MTV VMAs 2022, it has been claimed.
The Pirates of the Caribbean actor recently returned to work for the first time following his court win against ex-wife Amber Heard.
Following the news that he will be getting behind the camera for a biopic on acclaimed artist Modigliani, the 59-year-old is reportedly set to take on a role that is slightly different.
According to reports, he has been in talks to dress up as a Moonman mascot at this weekend’s Video Music Awards, held in New Jersey.
Kendrick Lamar and Lil Nas X lead nominations at the upcoming ceremony, with Nicki Minaj and Red Hot Chili Peppers being honored on the night.
TMZ reports that the stars will be joined by Depp, dressed up as the iconic Moonman, and he will be unveiled at some point during the broadcast.

The Captain Jack Sparrow star is no stranger to MTV award shows and has been nominated multiple times.
In fact, he has taken home five MTV Movie Awards trophies over the years, including three for Pirates of the Caribbean, and the coveted MTV Generation Award in 2012.
It was recently suggested that Depp could be in for a shock comeback to the Fantastic Beasts fold, following his departure in 2020.
He originally starred Gellert Grindelwald in the first two outings of the Harry Potter spin-off, before he was replaced in 2022 sequel, The Secrets of Dumbledore over his highly-publicized legal battles.

The Edward Scissorhands actor was asked to step down from the wizarding spin-off franchise after he lost a High Court battle against the Sun newspaper, over an article that labelled him a ‘wife beater’.
‘I wish to let you know that I have been asked to resign by Warner Bros from my role as Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts and I have respected and agreed to that request,’ he said in a statement at the time.
‘My resolve remains strong and I intend to prove that the allegations against me are false.
‘My life and career will not be defined by this moment in time. Thank you for reading.’
Mads Mikkelsen eventually took over the role from Depp (Picture: Rex)
Mads Mikkelsen was later announced as his replacement and recently admitted that he was ‘intimidated’ to take over the role.
During an appearance at the Sarajevo Film Festival, the 58-year-old reportedly said via Deadline: ’It was very intimidating. Obviously, well, now the course has changed – he won the suit, the court [case] – so let’s see if he comes back. He might.’
On his own portrayal of Grindelwald, Mikkelsen explained that he was forced to go back to the drawing board for the character, as Depp had put ‘so much’ of himself into the part.

‘I’m a big fan of Johnny. I think he’s an amazing actor, I think he did a fantastic job,’ the Hannibal star added. ‘Having said that, I could not copy it. There’s there was no way I could just copy it, because it’s so much him. It would be creative suicide.
‘We had to come up with something else, something that was mine, and build a bridge between him and me. So, yes, it was intimidating.
‘His fans were very, very sweet, but they were also very stubborn. I didn’t interact too much with them, but I could understand why they had their hearts broken.’
