Andrew Garfield has said he ‘starved’ himself of sex and food for his role in the film Silence as he defended method acting.
Method acting has been used by actors including Jared Leto and Succession’s Jeremy Strong, and Spider-Man star Andrew is on board – but he says there are plenty of misconceptions about it.
The actor, who played Sebastião Rodrigues, a role based on a real-life Jesuit priest, in Martin Scorsese’s 2016 film, said he was celibate for six months and also fasted.
He said: ‘It was very cool, man. I had some pretty wild, trippy experiences from starving myself of sex and food for that period of time.
‘There [have] been a lot of misconceptions about what method acting is, I think,’ Andrew added on the WTF podcast with Mark Maron.
‘People are still acting in that way, and it’s not about being an a**hole to everyone on set.’
He added that it’s also about being able to drop it when you need to, and staying in it when you need to – and, crucially, still being kind and considerate to everyone else on set.

Method acting is a practice introduced by Russian actor and director Konstantin Stanislavski in the early 1900s, whereby a performer seeks to put themselves entirely in the shoes and emotional experiences of their character in order to find their true feelings and motivations.
Acting coaches Lee Strasberg, Stella Adler and Sanford Meisner also contributed to the growth and success of the approach, teaching people including Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Marlon Brando, Steve McQueen and Jeff Goldblum.

Julia Roberts recently said she found the idea ‘exhausting’, admitting she’s not keen to try.
She added to Variety: ‘I mean, I admire people that do that. It looks exhausting to me and I secretly think: “Oh, I wish I could do that. I wish I could be that intense.” I’m just kidding.’
Actor Jared is known for staying in character, with the director of his movie Morbius revealing that he was pushed in a wheelchair to toilet breaks in order to save time, as he was determined to remain immersed as his scientist character, who experiences chronic pain and uses crutches.
Daniel Day-Lewis is also known for his method acting.
For The Last of the Mohicans, he reportedly went to live in the woods in North Carolina to learn the survivalist lifestyle of a frontiersman and brought his gun everywhere with him – including Christmas lunch.
