For those champing at the bit for some new tunes from Arctic Monkeys, wonder where these new bops are no more.

The Alex Turned-fronted Sheffield band casually dropped a new ditty on unsuspecting fans during a gig on Tuesday night at Zurich Openair festival and it’s safe to say the fandom is stirred.

In footage captured by punters of the band launching into the new song, titled I Ain’t Quite Where I Think I Am (sounds about right for an Arctic Monkeys song), Turner showcased the funky bop which wasn’t too dissimilar in vibe to the band’s last album Tranquility Base Hotel And Casino.

This surprise drop, believed to be the first taste of their follow-up to the 2018 release, comes amid speculation the group – who headline Reading and Leeds Festivals this weekend – recorded their new album in Suffolk last summer.

Turner and co were reported to have stayed at Butley Priory, a former gatehouse to an Augustinian monastery, while they worked on their hotly-awaited follow-up with drummer Matt Helders saying in late 2021 the band’s new record, their seventh, was ‘pretty much’ finished and, as he said at the time, likely to arrive before the 2022 tour begins.

Ok, so we didn’t get that, but we’ve at least got this new song…

Butley Priory itself had previously let slip in a since-deleted blog post on their website the band was holed up recording the album there, writing: ‘We’ve had a band staying with us for the last month recording an album.

‘Musicians love the acoustics in the Great Hall and Drawing Room, with their huge vaulted ceilings.

‘Being serenaded while watering and weeding the garden, listening to the double bass, drums and piano wafting out of the open double doors, was pretty nice. Thank you, Arctic Monkeys.’

Drummer Helders previously revealed the Brianstorm rockers – which also call Jamie Cook, Nick O’Malley as members – were in the ‘early stages’ of trying to ‘write a [new] record’, but were ‘faced with various obstacles’ amid the pandemic.

He said: ‘Being separated by the sea is one of them.

‘We’re all eager to do it – we would have been doing it by now in a normal time.

‘There’s definitely a desire from our end to do a new record, as soon as we can.’

It was later said AM7 ‘picks up where Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino left off’, which makes a load of sense when you listen to their new tune.

It’s alright, lads, four years later we are still tingling with anticipation.
