Couple shocked after discovering £100,000 artwork on bedroom wall that was nearly scribbled over by toddler-Ruth Lawes-Entertainment – Metro

A Fake or Fortune? couple were quids in when they were surprised to learn a painting in their home was worth hundreds of thousands of pounds.
The hit BBC show, which sees Fiona Bruce and expert Philip Mould discover the real value of mysterious artworks, came back with a splash on Tuesday night.
Julie and her husband Ian wanted the lowdown on an abstract original that had been hanging in their bedroom since they moved in.
The artwork had been nearly destroyed by the family, with Ian initially wanting to paint over the wall, while their toddler had wanted to attack it with crayons.
Luckily they held off removing the pic, which Julie revealed didn’t fit in with her decor plans, after being informed by a neighbour it might be worth something.
After examining the unwanted painting, Philip, 62, told the shocked pair was produced by British modernist Ben Nicholson and another artist, declaring the collaboration as ‘most unusual.’
‘It entwines two crucial figures together and is a very personal thing,’ he explained.

Pointing out art dealers would be ‘intrigued and drawn’ to the rare work, Philip estimated it would fetch between £50,000 to £100,000.
In shock, Ian said: ‘It’s coming off the wall, without a doubt. It’s too fragile anyway and it needs looking after.’
But that wasn’t the end of it, as the married couple needed to remove it safely from their brickwork and avoid it being damaged.

The operation took weeks of planning but was pulled off successfully with the help of special materials.
The artwork will be going up for auction. Wonder how Julie and Ian will splash the cash?
