Demi Lovato has opened up about her first experience with opiates at just ’12 or 13’ after being prescribed them after a car accident.

The singer, 30, has been open about her struggles with drugs and alcohol, which led to an almost fatal overdose in 2018.

Demi revealed that her first experience with opiates came at a young age after she was prescribed the powerful pills when she was a child.

She revealed on a new episode of the Call Her Daddy podcast: ‘I started experimenting for the first time when I was 12, or 13.

‘I got into a car accident and they prescribed me opiates.’

The Confident star recalled that her mother ‘didn’t think she would have to lock up the opiates from her 13-year-old daughter but I was already drinking at that point’.

She admitted that part of her attraction to substances was to ‘escape’ from her daily life, explaining: ‘I had been bullied and was looking for an escape.’

Demi admitted that she first tried alcohol ‘alone’ after stealing beer from her stepfather’s fridge, admitting: ‘[That] should have been a major red flag.’

Her early experimentation with alcohol and opiates later turned to other drugs as Demi revealed she ended up trying cocaine.

She explained: ‘At 17, it was the first time I tried coke and, like, loved it too much and then kinda bled into me going to treatment right after I turned 18.’

Demi opened up about relapsing after six years of sobriety in her track Sober, released in June 2018, a month before she was rushed to hospital after suffering a near-fatal overdose at her home.

She later revealed doctors told her she was ’10 minutes’ from death after reportedly overdosing on oxycodone laced with fentanyl, a potent opioid responsible for many accidental deaths.
