WWE fans caught a glimpse of a second generation star on NXT this week as Charlie Dempsey made his debut.

The rising star – whose father is WWE legend and current AEW veteran William Regal – first appeared on NXT UK in February 2021 and has faced the likes of Tyler Bate, Joe Coffey, A-Kid (now XXX) and more at BT Sport Studios before moving to the US.

It looks like Dempsey will now be playing a role in the Florida-based brand, particularly after the news NXT UK will close its doors after Worlds Collide on September 4 before relaunching as NXT Europe in 2023.

On Wednesday night’s episode, he appeared in a backstage segment with Chase U, although things didn’t exactly go to plan.

He was there to teach wrestling, but instead choked out Bodhi Hayward, and insisted Andre Chase’s class was too soft before urging students to Google wrestling legend Billy Robinson.

It was a fun introduction for Dempsey, and suggests he may even play off the same mix of wrestling pedigree and comedy that made his famous dad such a success.

Elsewhere on the show, the march to Worlds Collide continued with major news regarding the current batch of NXT UK champions.

NXT United Kingdom Champ Tyler Bate will put his gold on the line in a title for title bout against NXT Champ Bron Breakker, while NXT UK Women’s Champion Meiko Satomura and NXT Women’s Champion Mandy Rose will put their titles up for grabs in a Triple Threat involving Blair Davenport.

While it’s a shame to see these championships – and the NXT UK Tag Team Titles – coming to an end, it does make sense given the switch to NXT Europe next year.

Back to Dempsey, he’s got the backing of his legendary dad to make it in the business, and the pair even had a long match with each other at the Performance Center in Orlando back in December, before Regal was released and moved onto AEW.

Explaining why he will never wrestle in front of fans again, Regal exclusively told Metro.co.uk: ‘I wrestled my son for an hour before Christmas in the PC in Orlando. I can wrestle. I’d rather that match with Cesaro be my final thing. “Elvis has left the building”. That’s why Colonel Tom Parker never let Elvis do an encore.

‘Don’t ruin it for myself. That was as good as a match as it could ever be for me to finish my career, and 30 years in, it’s somebody else’s turn now. Why ruin it?’

WWE NXT 2.0 airs Tuesday nights at 1am on BT Sport 1.
