Jon Moxley has been officially crowned AEW World Heavyweight Champion after beating CM Punk in a matter of minutes on Dynamite.
The two stars – who first crossed paths on screen nine years ago in WWE when Mox, then known as Dean Ambrose, was a member of The Shield – were battling to decide the company’s definitive titleholder on Wednesday night’s episode.
Days after winning the championship from ‘Hangman’ Adam Page at Double Or Nothing in May, Punk had to step back due to injury and Moxley subsequently won a tournament to become interim champ, while Punk held onto the official gold.
Punk made a shock comeback recently, with the pair soon setting their match to decide the true champion for last night’s episode of Dynamite.
Fans were surprised the match was booked for the weekly TV show, rather than the All Out pay-per-view event taking place in Chicago on September 4.
It meant people were suspecting some kind of twist or non-finish last night, although what actually transpired was completely unexpected.
Despite being billed as one of the most significant matches in AEW history, things already seemed strange when the stars came out midway through the show rather than in the main event.
The bell rang with Mox in control, and an attempted roundhouse kick from Punk left him looking like he’d suffered another foot injury, although it’s unclear if this was legitimate or a storyline twist.
Mox capitalised with two Death Riders in a row, pinning Punk and leaving the crowd feeling a range of emotions from stunned to totally confused at what had transpired.
There had been speculation MJF could make a shock return to play into the ending of the match and set up a major clash for All Out, but that didn’t happen and the situation remains unclear.
With Punk – who has been the subject of plenty of reports about his own attitude backstage – helped to the back by officials and his friend Ace Steel, it seems unlikely a rematch will take place in just over a week’s time.
Now, fans are left wondering what Tony Khan has planned for All Out, with some of the card in disarray and just one episode of Dynamite left to fix things.
AEW Dynamite airs Wednesday nights at 1am on Fite TV.
