Britney Spears has said she’s ‘overwhelmed’ to be releasing her first new song in six years, as she collaborates with Sir Elton John on their duet Hold Me Closer.

The Toxic hitmaker will provide a new twist on Sir Elton’s Tiny Dancer, with the song set for release on Friday.

Speaking about the huge moment, Britney, 40, wrote on Twitter: ‘Okie dokie … my first song in 6 years!!!!

‘It’s pretty damn cool that I’m singing with one of the most classic men of our time …@eltonofficial!!!! I’m kinda overwhelmed… it’s a big deal to me !!! I’m meditating more and learning my space is valuable and precious !!!’

She added: ‘I’m learning everyday is a clean slate to try and be a better person and do what makes me happy … yes I choose happiness today. I tell myself every day to let go of the hurt bitterness and try to forgive myself and others to what may have been hurtful.

‘I want to be fearless like when I was younger and not be so scared and fearful. I pray there actually is truth to the Holy Spirit and I hope that spirit is with my children as well !!! Yes … I choose happiness and joy today!!!’

Britney took to Twitter to share the message, after seemingly deactivating her Instagram again.

The star has taken two previous breaks from the social media, so it seems likely she’ll be back soon.

She last deactivated her account in June, following her wedding to Sam Asghari. However, she returned just a week later, showing off her new house after moving with her new husband.

Hold Me Closer, a spin on Sir Elton’s 1971 classic, will mark Britney’s return to music and her first release since 2016, following the end of her 13-year long conservatorship in November 2021.

Sir Elton, 75, recently shared a snippet of the song with fans, teasing the highly-anticipated release.

Sharing the artwork and teaser on TikTok, Sir Elton penned: ‘#HoldMeCloser with @britneyspears. Coming August 26,’ with a rose and rocket emoji, representing Britney and Sir Elton respectively.

Britney shared her excitement for the new track, writing on Instagram: ‘I appreciate this and all of your support it means so much to me!!!

‘I can’t wait for you all to hear what we’ve been working on.’
