The price of the Xbox Series X and S consoles will not increase in the same way as the PS5, but Microsoft hasn’t ruled out a future change.

The fact that Microsoft is a far bigger and richer company than Sony (and, indeed, everyone else) has been made increasingly more obvious over the course of this new generation of consoles, especially in terms of how much money they’ve spent on Game Pass and making all their games available on day one – something Sony cannot afford to do.

The other thing Sony cannot afford to do, so they claim, is avoid a price hike for the PlayStation 5, with the current worldwide inflation crisis causing them to raise the price of both models of console by £30.

Microsoft has refused to comment on the situation up until now but, following Sony’s announcement, they’ve said they have no plans to change the price of the Xbox Series X or S… at least for now.

The PlayStation 5 price rise has affected every major market except for the US, which suggests that Sony can only afford to protect its most important market from having to pay more.

Traditionally, the Xbox has only ever been a major success in America and the UK, so they may be hoping that by not announcing a price rise they will be able to make more inroads into continental Europe.

Their brief statement doesn’t offer any future guarantees though. ‘We are constantly evaluating our business to offer our fans great gaming options,’ a spokesperson told VGC.

‘Our Xbox Series S suggested retail price remains from £249.99 and the Xbox Series X is from £449.99.’

Sony blamed the price rise on the inflation crisis that has hit most countries worldwide, including the US. It has not said whether it will lower the price again, if and when the situation returns to normal.

Nintendo has already said they want to ‘avoid pricing people out’, but like Microsoft has not entirely ruled out the possibility of an increase in the future.
