Phillip Schofield has updated fans with the news that he’s in hospital for surgery to help his ‘debilitating’ eye condition.

The This Morning presenter revealed he has had ‘floaters’ removed from both of his eyes, explaining the condition on Instagram and thanking the team of doctors who helped him.

The news comes after a procedure he underwent in July, where he sported an eye-patch on his left eye after undergoing the operation for the eye condition which used to drive him ‘insane’.

This time around, he continued his pirate impression and swapped the eye-patch over to his right side.

He told his 3million fans on Instagram: ‘FLOATERS: Details as promised if you suffer from debilitating floaters. Firstly, no part of my treatment and surgery was gifted and I wasn’t asked to post. It is also pioneering and costly. It was carried out by Prof Stanga at The Retina Clinic in London.

‘I had Elective limited pars plana vitrectomy surgery. It didn’t hurt! If you have been told ‘just live with them’ that is not necessarily true, I’m sure there are exceptions, but they can be fixed. A full vitrectomy will usually cause a cataract quite soon after, a limited vitrectomy won’t.’

He added: ‘These floaters have literally blighted my otherwise brilliant eyesight. For the first time in many years, right now, I’m looking at a clear blue sky, it is mood/mind and life changing for me.

‘People who don’t have terrible floaters won’t understand what they do to your head and until now they really haven’t been taken seriously.

‘Today I have a blood shot eye that will last 2 weeks and an intense regime of eye drops for a month… but my floaters are 100% gone.’

He finished by saying he’s ‘happy to promote British medical innovation,’ and concluded: ‘Hope that answered the many questions I’ve been asked in the last 24 hours.’

Floaters

Floaters can be small dark dots, squiggly lines or rings in your eyes. The NHS points out that floaters and flashes of light in your vision are common and usually not that serious.

In 2020, Phil spoke about his condition on the ITV daytime show and revealed: ‘My retinas are not detaching, but I have debilitating eye floaters.’

He added that the floaters drove him ‘insane,’ saying: ‘My vision is like a filthy bathroom window drifting across my eyes, and it drives me crazy.’
