The Crown series 5 is coming this autumn, and it seems there’s a lot to look forward to, with the new instalment described as ‘unprecedented’.

The upcoming season of the hit Netflix period drama is expected to have a time jump, as audiences are transported to the early 1990s in Buckingham Palace, with Imelda Staunton taking over from Olivia Colman as Queen Elizabeth II.

Edith Bowman, who hosts The Crown podcast, told Metro.co.uk: ‘This season is going to blow people’s minds for so many reasons’.

‘It’s always that thing because it’s a new set of cast. We’ve gotten used to Olivia [Colman] and Josh [O’Connor] and Tobias [Menzies] and Emma [Corrin] and Helen [Bonham-Carter], and we’ve got a whole new set of cast. It’s almost like it’s always been them. You’ll find you’ve not taken a breath for like three minutes when you see them on screen for the first time – and that’s all of them’.

Asked to describe series five (with, of course, no spoilers), Edith simply declared it: ‘Unprecedented’.

Edith will be back to host the podcast for a third season, interviewing all the key people involved in the process, including creator and showrunner Peter Morgan.

As The Crown season five will be set after the events of season four, the characters have been recast to reflect their older selves.

Imelda is the most notable replacement, succeeding Oscar-winner Olivia as the monarch, with Netflix recently revealing a first look at the actress in the role.

Game of Thrones star Jonathan Pryce is taking over from Tobias Menzies as Prince Philip and Lesley Manville is replacing Helena Bonham-Carter as Princess Margaret.

Elizabeth Debicki, known for Tenet and Guardians Of The Galaxy, will replace Emma Corrin as Princess Diana, while it has been rumoured that Dominic West is in discussions about playing Prince Charles.

While Tony Blair is also expected to be depicted in the upcoming instalments, Elementary star Jonny Lee Miller has been cast as former prime minister Sir John Major, who served as the PM from 1990 to 1997 as leader of the Conservative Party.

It’s expected that the series will now flash forward at least two to three years, with 1992 being the year that Charles and Diana officially announced their split.

Aside from The Crown podcast, Edith has been hosting the BMW Play Next stage at All Points East, championing new music and smaller artists.

‘I love it, as a festival, I think it’s great. There’s something really attractive about a city festival. I’ve seen quite a few over the years, whether that be in Barcelona, or Glasgow, or London, and I think it’s kind of getting bigger and better every year.

‘It’s the second time that we’ve [fronted the BMW Play Next stage], we have the pdocast and the main aim of it was to have a platform that’s about new music and to have a conversation about new music and creativity, and to have BMW connect to that and put up the money to set up the stage is amazing, both in terms of something for me to be part of, but also for these artists.’

Edith Bowman is hosting the BMW Play Next Stage at All Points East, showcasing ground-breaking music from the next generation of talented artists alongside headline acts.
