The Walking Dead spin-off Isle of the Dead has been given a new name after being unveiled with a working title earlier this year.

Back in March, AMC unveiled plans for a series focused on Maggie and Negan with Lauren Cohan and new The Boys star Jeffrey Dean Morgan reprising their roles from the main post-apocalyptic zombie drama.

Now, Entertainment Weekly was confirmed the show will now officially be known as The Walking Dead: Dead City.

No reason has been given for the name change, but it’s safe to say plenty of fans aren’t happy with the switch, with a lot of people referring the working title.

‘Isle of the Dead sounds so much better than Dead City,’ tweeted one viewer, while others suggested potential names including City (or Isle) of the Walking Dead to still get the main series in there.

Another fan added: ‘I’m glad I’m not the only one who seems to have liked Isle of the Dead better than Dead City. It just had a better ring to it. It’s going to take a while for me to get used to it lol. (sic)’

And a different person suggested: ‘Dead City doesn’t bother me too much. It’s definitely the Dead Dead. Just throw an apostrophe S on there and make it The Walking Dead’s Dead City. Still prefer Isle of the Dead, but at least I wouldn’t be as tempted to ridicule the name.’

The spin-off started filming in New Jersey recently, and it’s set to launch in with a six-episode first season in 2023.

Revealing the news in earlier this year, AMC teased: ‘Isle of the Dead envisions the popular Maggie and Negan characters traveling into a post-apocalyptic Manhattan long ago cut off from the mainland.

‘The crumbling city is filled with the dead and denizens who have made New York City their own world full of anarchy, danger, beauty, and terror.’

Lauren commented: ‘Maggie is very close to my heart and I’m excited to continue her journey against the iconic backdrop of New York City, alongside my friend and collaborator, Jeffrey Dean Morgan.

‘Eli Jorné has created something incredibly special and I cannot wait for the fans to see what we have in store for Maggie and Negan.’

And Jeffrey is excited to get the chance to explore their characters in a totally new environment.

‘It’s been such a ride walking in Negan’s shoes, I’m beyond excited to continue his journey in New York City with Lauren,’ he added. ‘Walkers in an urban setting has always been such a cool image, but 5th Avenue, Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty? The greatest city in the world?

‘The backdrop is amazing, but it’s the story that [writer] Eli Jorné cooked up that is even better.’

The Walking Dead is available to stream on Disney+ and Amazon Prime.
