If anyone is to ever lead the campaign for an edit feature on Twitter, it should probably be Dan Walker.

The former BBC Breakfast host left fans in hysterics when he made a rather awkward – but equally hilarious – typo on Saturday morning.

Dan and Michaela Strachan recently launched their new show, Digging for Treasure, which airs on Channel 5 and follows searches for lost artefacts and valuable treasures misplaced by people in centuries gone by.

Sharing his excitement over the most recent episode, Dan wrote what he probably thought was one of his most innocent social media posts, but perhaps he’ll give his tweets a proofread in future.

‘Fantastic response to Dogging For Treasure last night and great figures!’, the TV star wrote, completely oblivious to the fact that he’d typed ‘Dogging’ instead of ‘Digging’.

‘Thanks for watching and for the feedback. We are filming again today – with a little less clapping – and celebrating with a snack of choice’, he taunted following viewer complaints that crew members were too noisy during the show.

‘See you next Friday at 9’, he finished, sharing a picture of him and his co-stars enjoying a snack in the field.

Dan’s Twitter followers quickly picked up on his mishap and aren’t likely to forget it in a hurry, with hundreds of people teasing him in the replies.

The presenter was mocked so much, in fact, that ‘dogging’ actually started trending in the UK.

‘One of the best tweets you’ve ever one’, one fan wrote.

‘I’m assuming this new series will be on late night pay per view?’, another joked.

A third chimed in: ‘Dogging For Treasure sounds like a whole different programme Dan!!’

Several Twitter users also dug out the famous clip of Carol Kirkwood on BBC News in 2020, where she too made a ‘dogging’ blunder and became an internet meme.

‘Greenwich Park is one of the oldest of the royal parks and look at it, the sun is beating down, we’ve seen lots of doggers- not doggers, of course, lot’s of dog walkers’, she said in the now-viral clip.

But, in true Dan style, he saw the funny side of his awkward encounter with autocorrect as he later clarified that he meant ‘digging’ with an embarrassed emoji.

‘Full apology has been accepted and I have offered my resignation’, he quipped in response to co-host Michaela, who urged him to ‘spellcheck’ next time.

Oh, Dan! Don’t worry, we’ve all been there.

Digging (the other one doesn’t yet exist) airs Fridays at 9pm on Channel 5.
