Harry Smith is standing tall as a champion in the National Wrestling Alliance, but he knows it’s not always smooth sailing.
The 37-year-old wrestler – who has often used the name Davey Boy Smith Jr in tribute to his dad the British Bulldog – has built a reputation as a serious heavyweight performer and is one half of the NWA’s tag team champs with British wrestling legend Doug Williams, while he previously had a couple of spells in WWE and he certainly understands the pitfalls of live entertainment.
Back in 2010, he found himself teaming with Tyson Kidd, Chris Jericho and Edge against The Nexus (Wade Barrett, Heath Slater, Michael Tarver and David Otunga) on a live event in Ontario, and he exclusively told Metro.co.uk about a very awkward in-ring moment.
‘There was this guy named Ronnie Gaff, he used to drive Owen [Hart] around and everything like that, and he was just a complete idiot! He was always kinda comical,’ he laughed. ‘He liked to help you, but he’d drive you somewhere and the tire will blow out on the way there.’
Ronnie invited Smith and his fellow Canadians Jericho and Kidd to a BBQ at his home, but a bad hot dog and a huge slam from Barrett ended up being a bad combination.
‘I remember I had one of his lousy little hot dogs. I remember it was Nexus at the point,’ he laughed. ‘We were wrestling and I remember I could feel my stomach just… this hot dog and everything.
‘I was like, “I made it this far”, it was an eight-man elimination match. Wade Barrett, right when he gave me his finish – on the fireman carry I’m like, “OK I can make it!
‘And right when he whipped me I was like, “Oh sh…” Yeah. Luckily, it was one two three and I rolled to the back, straight into the bathroom and cleaned myself up. That wasn’t embarrassing moment but that would be one of those moments where you’re like, “Uh…” ‘
It’s not always been quite so awkward for the talented star, and he’s currently holding gold with Williams 16 years after they wrestled each other one-on-one for 1PW at the Doncaster Dome.
‘I don’t know if it’s circulating round on the internet or anything, It was a good, solid match, that was the first time I’d met Doug,’ he recalled. ‘I’d seen his work a little bit in Ring of Honor prior to that, old school VHS tapes, and I was definitely impressed with him at that point.’
A decade and a half later, the pair now form Commonwealth Connection in the NWA, and they’ll be defending their titles tonight (August 27) at NWA 74 against La Rebelión.
‘Doug’s a really nice guy, he’s fairly modest outside of the ring – a real English gentleman,’ he smiled, admitting while the in-ring chemistry is there, they’re not best friends away from work.
‘It’s not like a business thing, but we haven’t hung out and gone out for fondue together or whatever… We’ve gotten along pretty good outside of the ring. Not super great friends, but when we get in the ring it just gels.’
Heading into a championship defence on NWA’s biggest weekend of the year, Harry is ‘certainly confident’, and he’s already looking forward to whatever challengers boss Billy Corgan has ready for them next.
‘Right now, I feel that we’re comparable to any other tag team in the world right now,’ he said. ‘I’m not sure whatever tag team outside of NWA that would like to challenge us, but we’d certainly welcome them – not with open arms, but I think we’re a really strong, cohesive unit.
‘I think that we’re gonna show that this weekend.’
NWA 74 airs Saturday (August 27) and Sunday (August 28) at 1am on Fite TV.
