The Rings of Power, the new Lord of the Rings TV series from Amazon Prime Video, is reported to be the most expensive ever produced.

Negotiations for the Lord of the Rings spin-off, which is set thousands of years before the events of the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings trilogies, involved Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos himself.

The series will be based on a collection of books and notes that were compiled by the creator and author of Lord of the Rings, JRR Tolkien, before his death in 1973 at the age of 81.

The list of characters is huge, and the ensemble cast is already shaping up to be one of the largest in this era of TV, but who are they all?

And where might you have seen them before?

Morfydd Clark (Galadriel)

Morfydd Clark might be best to known viewers of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power as Sister Clara from the first season of the BBC fantasy series His Dark Materials.

She also appeared as the lead in psychological indie horror movie Saint Maud, in which she portrays a palliative care nurse to a wealthy cancer patient in the coastal town of Scarborough.

Clark a received nomination from the British Academy for her role.

Sir Lenny Henry (Sadoc Burrows)

One of the biggest names to British viewers of The Rings of Power will be comedian and actor Sir Lenny Henry, who will be lending his acting chops to the role of Sadoc Burrows, a Harfoot (an ancestor of Hobbits like Frodo Baggins).

Sadoc is another character created for the TV show who was never mentioned in the works published by JRR Tolkien.

And it’s not the first time Sir Lenny has appeared on TV in a fictional role, despite being known for his live comedy. He appeared in Doctor Who in 2020, and before that he starred in ITV drama Broadchurch, among other shows.

Robert Aramayo (Elrond)

Robert Aramayo has traded one huge fantasy series for another. He starred as a young Ned Stark in flashbacks during Game of Thrones’ 6th and 7th seasons, taking part in the iconic reveal of Jon Snow’s true heritage.

Aramayo, 29, will be taking on the role of Elrond, who was played by Hugo Weaving in the Peter Jackson films, and formed the famous Fellowship of the Ring. He spent quite a lot of the movies giving Aragorn (Viggo Mortenson) a hard time.

Nazanin Boniadi (Bronwyn)

Nazanin Boniadi will probably be best known to Rings of Power fans for her roles in Homeland and How I Met Your Mother.

In Homeland, she appeared in 12 episodes as Fara Sherazi, while she appeared as Nora in 10 episodes of How I Met Your Mother.

She will be playing Bronwyn, a character who does not appear in the works of JRR Tolkien and is therefore a character original to the upcoming series. Bronwyn hails from the village of Tirharad, located in Mordor.

Owain Arthur (Prince Durin IV)

Owain Arthur will be taking on the role of Prince Durin IV, a dwarf prince who is the son of King Durin III (who will be played by Peter Mullan).

Arthur started his career on Welsh television, in S4C soap opera Rownd a Rownd. It was announced in February of this year that he would be appearing as the dwarf prince in The Rings of Power.

Markella Kavenagh (Elanor Brandyfoot)

Markella Kavenagh is an Australian actress who has almost exclusively appeared in Australian TV shows up to now – The Rings of Power is likely to be her big international break.

Elanor Brandyfoot will play another of the Harfoots, and is another character created just for The Rings of Power.

Appearing as another character made for the TV series is Charlie Vickers, who will take on the role of Halbrand – someone that Galadriel apparently encounters during a rainstorm on the Sundering Seas.

Ismael Cruz Córdova (Arondir)

Completing the list of the main cast is yet another actor who will be playing a character invented for the show. Ismael Cruz Córdova will be playing elf Arondir, who will apparently be starting the show near to Bronwyn in the village of Tirharad.
