Former BBC Breakfast host Bill Turnbull has died at the age of 66 after battling prostate cancer, his family has confirmed.

The TV presenter and journalist revealed he had been diagnosed with the disease in March 2018 and detailed his treatment in a Channel 4 documentary called Staying Alive.

His family confirmed on Thursday morning the beloved broadcaster had died peacefully in a statement.

They said: ‘Bill was diagnosed in 2017 and has had outstanding medical care from the Royal Marsden and Ipswich Hospitals, St Elizabeth Hospice and his GP.’

‘He was resolutely positive and was hugely buoyed by the support he received from friends, colleagues, and messages from people wishing him luck. It was a great comfort to Bill that so many more men are now testing earlier for this disease.

‘Bill will be remembered by many as a remarkable broadcaster who brought warmth and humour into people’s homes on BBC Breakfast and Classic FM.’

Turnbull started his career in journalism as a student at the University of Edinburgh, where he edited the paper.

His first job was at local Scottish station Radio Clyde in 1978, before joining the BBC’s Today and Breakfast Time programmes as a reporter.

Continuing at the Beeb, Turnbull was promoted to a correspondent for BBC News, including a stint as the Washington correspondent, based in the States.

After moving back to the UK, Turnbull took up a post on BBC News 24 and then joined the BBC Breakfast team in 2001 as a weekend presenter, appearing alongside hosts such as Sophie Raworth and Natasha Kaplinsky.

Outside of journalism, Turnbull appeared on Strictly Come Dancing, finishing in sixth place despite suffering an injury.
