I’m a mum-of-two and here’s what NOT to wear on the school run – mini skirts make you look desperate and PJs are lazy

TRACKSUITS and statement coats are IN but cargo pants and gym gear are OUT, says fashion influencer and mum of two Naomi Isted, 43.

KEEP: TRACKSUITS

IF you are anything like me, you will still love the lockdown loungewear, but you don’t want to look like Waynetta Slob at the gates.

My advice is to stay comfortable in your tracksuit but add stylish accessories such as a pair of sunglasses, big bag, statement jewellery and a long coat over the top.

This creates an A-lister look but you feel like you are still in your dressing gown.

DITCH: CARGO PANTS

DON’T feel the need to follow all the fast-fashion micro trends like the current Noughties comeback, cargo pants.

All the kids are wearing them, but they’re not for everyone and they won’t necessarily be the most flattering, especially if you feel the slightest bit body-conscious.

KEEP: BIG HATS

FOR the bad hair days, a quality big hat can work wonders. It can also be the difference between a drab look and effortless chic.

I have the same hat in cream, black and navy depending on my outfits.

Team it with a big pair of sunnies and chunky earrings and it will glam up the more plain outfits — even a simple T-shirt and jeans can be instantly transformed.

DITCH: MICRO MINIS

SHORT skirts really are a bit of a no-no on the school run, especially the current micro-mini trend.

Think how uncomfortable it will be leaning into the car to get the school bags or bending down to tie the kids’ shoes without flashing everyone.

Sorry, but it’s a tad sad seeing mums who think it’s a Friday night out but forget they’re actually at school.

KEEP: THROW-ON JACKET

DEPENDING on your own personal style, try to invest in a quality trendy coat that can work with trousers, shorts or skirts, like a leather biker jacket.

They are timeless and set to be huge this season, plus they can make a fairly casual outfit look funky instantly.

Whether worn with a T-shirt dress or relaxed floaty skirt and logo tee, a biker jacket is a safe investment. I love my leopard-print faux fur one for colder days.

DITCH: UNPLANNED OUTFITS

DO not leave what you’re wearing for the school run until 20 minutes before you leave — rushing with the kids distracting you is going to be a style disaster.

Try to plan your school-run outfits in advance, ideally at the weekend. But if you don’t have time to do that, then please, please plan your outfit the night before.

Honestly, it will save you lots of stress, time and an embarrassing fashion faux pas.

KEEP: SHIRT DRESSES

A BASIC shirt dress can be a great quick, stylish school-run look teamed with a biker jacket and trainers — or in winter, tights and chunky boots.

Shirt styles are flattering on all figures, with buttons that allow you to adjust the feel of the dress while their long sleeves and collar instantly make you look smart.

With their light, cotton material, they are really comfy and breathable for that morning rush.

DITCH: GYM KIT

DON’T just wear your exercise kit as a uniform.

I see so many mums, who don’t even work out, wearing activewear day in and day out. Yes, it’s comfy and can be figure-hugging.

But switch up your pieces a bit — don’t wear the same two items every day.

If you do feel good in workout wear, think how you can style it, with high socks, trainers, a cap and oversized sunnies to make it look more stylish.

KEEP: CYCLING SHORTS

I LOVE the cycling shorts trend. They are so comfortable and you can wear them in so many ways, especially while the weather is still warm.

Throw on an oversized shirt and a trench coat, or for a more casual and sport-inspired look, just grab your favourite hoodie or jumper.

DITCH: PYJAMAS

PLEASE ladies, definitely no pyjama vibes — this is a total no-no on the school run. It just makes you look lazy.

You cannot get away with it unless they are silk and you are wearing them with heels and a full face of make-up. Anything else just makes you look really unkempt.

KEEP: YOUR OWN STYLE

REMEMBER to always keep your own style. Don’t be a copycat — this can be super-cringe.

If you have seen someone on the school run and think that their look is awesome, then avoid replicating the exact same style.

Instead, try to find a way to make it your own. Otherwise, you may well look slightly obsessive.
