The Grand Tour’s Richard Hammond expressed his surprise over James May’s ‘limbs’ still being intact after his high-speed crash took a horrifying turn while filming.

Earlier this month, the TV presenter was believed to be taking part in a dangerous drag-style race when the accident happened.

It was reported that James, Richard, and Jeremy Clarkson took turns to rally cars along a tunnel towards a rock wall while taking part in the challenge at a Norwegian naval base.

However, James hit his brakes too late, while driving at 75mph, and crashed into the wall.

After the ordeal, it was reported that the 59-year-old was given the all-clear, but was taken to hospital for a brain scan, as well as a broken rib.

Addressing the accident, Grand Tour co-star Richard branded the moment as a ‘singular lack of judgment on James’s part.’

‘He’s sort of held together with bits of cotton and sponge. So it was a hell of an impact. It’s pretty dramatic,’ he added to The Sun.

‘And I was surprised that all his limbs didn’t just fall off.’

James recently reassured fans that he was ‘perfectly OK’ following the incident.

‘Thank you for all your kind comments and funny jokes re my crash, but it was a while back, not that bad, and I’m perfectly OK,’ he said.

He then added: ‘Apologies to Evo fans for binning the VIII. #Bell**d.’

In 2006, Richard – who co-hosted BBC Two’s Top Gear from 2002 to 2015, alongside Clarkson and May – spent two weeks in a coma and sustained life changing brain injuries following a catastrophic car crash.

The near fatal accident happened while filming an episode of Top Gear at the RAF Elvington airfield near York.

He was driving at 317mph in a Vampire dragster – a jet-powered car that can reach up to 370mph – when the front tyre of the car unexpectedly failed. This caused the car to violently flip and roll.

Reflecting on his horrific incident, Richard revealed that he found it ‘very flattering that he [James] would consider that level of impersonation, but I’ll let him have that.’

The trio last thrilled fans with their Carnage a Trois – the second of their lockdown specials which launched in December 2021.

And now fans will see them head to the icy waters of the Scandinavian Arctic Circle.
