With the release of new The Lord of the Rings prequel series The Rings of Power imminent, its stars have been out in full force at premiere events recently.

In a cast comprised of rising talent and established actors, Sir Lenny Henry has taken on a part alongside Benjamin Walker, Nazanin Boniadi, Owain Arthur and A Discovery of Witches’ Trystan Gravelle.

His Dark Materials’ Morfydd Clark and Game of Thrones’ Robert Amarayo also star as elves Galadriel and Elrond, previously portrayed by Cate Blanchett and Hugo Weaving in Peter Jackson’s popular Lord of the Rings film trilogy.

The most expensive series ever made has certainly come with raised expectations, and many are already pleased to see increased diversity onscreen, but which character is Sir Lenny portraying?

The well-known comic, recently seen in a prominent role as Birmingham hosted the Commonwealth Games, has also got plenty of acting credits to his name from the past.

Sir Lenny Henry is lending his acting chops to the role of Sadoc Burrows, a Harfoot.

This species is an ancestor of Hobbits like Bilbo and Frodo Baggins, with The Rings of Power being set over 4,000 years before the events of The Hobbit, during Middle Earrth’s Second Age.

Sadoc is a character created especially for the TV show, who was never mentioned in the works published by JRR Tolkien, so not much is yet known about his journey.

Despite being best known as a comedian and co-founder of massively the successful charity Comic Relief and its offshoot fundraising events, including Red Nose Day, Sir Lenny is an experienced thespian.

After making his TV debut on the talent show New Faces, which he won, at the age of just 16 in 1975, Sir Lenny has gone on to balance comedy with acting on stage and on screen.

As well as having success with his own comedy shows, such as Lenny Henry Tonite and The Lenny Henry Show in the 1980s, he has also troad the boards in various productions for the Royal Shakespeare Company.

The Lord Of The Rings: The Rings Of Power begins on Amazon Prime on September 2, with new episodes available weekly.
