The Lord of the Rings wizard Gandalf, played by Sir Ian McKellen in Peter Jackson’s films, became a fan favourite in JRR Tolkien’s fantasy drama.

The wise elder is one of the bearers of the Three Rings, and possesses great power, which he uses to help destroy evil Sauron and the One Ring.

But could this force for good be back unleashing his special powers and saving Middle Earth in The Rings of Power?

In the Hobbit, Gandalf helps Bilbo Baggins and the dwarves as they battle for Lonely Mountain, which has been captured by Smaug the dragon.

Meanwhile, in The Lord of the Rings, the magical guide steers Frodo (Elijah Wood) as he wrestles Gollum (Andy Serkis) for ‘my precious’, eventually destroying the One Ring and Mordor.

Reported to be the most expensive series ever made The Rings of Power, with a reported price tag of $1billion (£858million), is set thousands of years before the events of The Lord of the Rings.

The latest Tolkien adaptation takes place in the Second Age, while The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings take place in the Third Age, and this is when Gandalf and his fellow wizards first appear.

For now, Gandalf, nor Ian, 83, have been confirmed as returning in The Rings of Power, but, given it’s a fantasy, theoretically anything is possible.

An article even ran at the end of last year speculating how the X-men actor’s character could appear in the prequel series played by a different – and younger – actor.

‘How Gandalf Can Appear In Amazon’s Lord of the Rings (But Not Ian McKellen)’ read the headline from Screen Rant, quite harshly.

But Sir Ian did not let that bother him and share the piece on his Twitter profile adding: ‘I think this would be the most upsetting headline I’d ever read, if I weren’t gainfully employed elsewhere.’

While the veteran performer will not be protecting Middle Earth for now, the new series boasts an exciting cast of new and famous faces.

His Dark Materials’ Morfydd Clark and Game of Thrones’ Robert Amarayo star as elves Galadriel and Elrond, previously portrayed by Cate Blanchett and Hugo Weaving in Peter Jackson’s popular trilogy, and are joined in the cast by the likes of Sir Lenny Henry, Benjamin Walker, Nazanin Boniadi, Owain Arthur and A Discovery of Witches’ Trystan Gravelle.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is available to stream on Amazon Prime
