Joe Lycett made sure to liven up the BBC’s new politics programme Sunday With Laura Kuenssberg, leaving fans in pieces as he spent the whole show being incredibly sarcastic.

The comedian, who has often criticised the government, joined Labour’s Emily Thornberry and former Number 10 staffer Cleo Watson to give his take ahead of the new leader of the Conservative party being announced.

Asked by Laura about the strength of Liz Truss’ position at the moment, Joe reflected: ‘I think the haters will say that we’ve had 12 years of the Tories and that we’re sort of at the dregs of what they’ve got available and that Liz Truss is the backwash of the available MPs.

‘I wouldn’t say that because I’m incredibly right wing, but some people might say that.’

As Laura suggested that the ‘consensus’ in politics is often wrong, and we don’t know what’s going to pan out, Joe spoke about ‘predicting the future’.

‘As Liz said there, it would be wrong to predict the future – even though loads of people have predicted that we’re going to have real issues with paying our energy bills. But I think she’s right to say, “Let’s not predict and see what happens next week.” I think she did the right thing there!’

As Laura attempted to get him to drop his persona, she pointed out: ‘There’s a serious point, Joe. She suggested there’s a big package of help coming this week to hep people pay their bills’.

‘She was very clear what she said!’ Joe joked. ‘I think we know exactly what’s going to happen. You’re reassured, I’m reassured, are you reassured?!’

One other memorable moment saw Joe criticising the BBC’s interview with Rishi Sunak, as ‘he’s not going to be Prime Minister, so you may as well have interviewed Peter Andre.’

Many viewers applauded Joe’s appearance and his ‘Grade A trolling’, calling for him to be a regular contributor.

“Some people would say after 12 years of Conservative rule, we are left with the dreggs of the Tory party in charge but I wouldn’t say that”

A lot of people not getting Joe Lycett being sarcastic.#bbclaurak

Joe Lycett on #bbclaurak “some people say we are at the dregs of the Tory party and this is the backwash of MPs” 😄

Completely disagree, Joe Lycett is using humour to shed light on the political situation in a way that will cut through to people differently to how both the politicians & the host will speak https://t.co/BQapMbGGbz

Getting @joelycett on #BBCBreakfast with Liz and Rishi is absolute genius, “Some would say Truss is the backwash, I wouldn’t say that because I’m very right wing” 🤣😂🤣👏

‘Grade A trolling from @joelycett this morning. Sensational scenes,’ one said.

Another added: ‘Big fan of @joelycett refusing to take an unserious person seriously.’

One more added: ‘In a single morning @joelycett has blown the lid off a failed format. Stifled, predictable dialogue doesn’t reassure people who are living through catastrophe. Joe Lycett has performed a public service, quite frankly.’

Joe only addressed the appearance on social media to give his tour a plug, joking: ‘If you want to hear more of my right wing opinions I’m on tour.’

The comedian previously hit out at the government when he hosted the opening ceremony for the Commonwealth Games.

While introducing athletes from countries in Asia in a frilly pink tracksuit, Joe took a moment out to land a blow.

‘I’m going to do something now that the British government doesn’t always do, and welcome some foreigners – this time from the region of Asia,’ he said.

Later on, after the ceremony had concluded, he took to Twitter to explain that it was ‘just a bit of banter’ before tagging Home Secretary Priti Patel in the post.

Sunday With Laura Kuenssberg is the BBC’s new flagship political show which came after Andrew Marr left the broadcaster.

Sunday With Laura Kuenssberg airs Sundays at 9am on BBC One.
