It’s happened again.

If you thought the infamous coffee cup was the last goof you’d ever see in the Game of Thrones universe, think again. Viserys’ rotting fingers have something to say about that.

In the first episode of House of the Dragon, King Viserys (Paddy Considine) cut his fingers on the Iron Throne.

The wound soon became infected and, as we saw in last night’s third episode, he eventually lost two fingers.

His rotting fingers were brilliantly rendered by greenscreen technology, with a particularly gruesome shot midway through the episode highlighting just how withered and infected his digits had become.

But fans on social media have spotted that not every shot of Viserys’ fingers was captured by the tech.

In one scene, as Viserys hands a scroll to a young soldier, actor Paddy Considine’s green finger sleeves can are clearly visible.

Of course, in a massive production of House of the Dragon’s size (or Game of Thrones for that matter), mistakes always happen.

In a world where eagle-eyed fans can share images in seconds, one tiny goof can, unfortunately, explode.

One fan said: ‘The CGI budget ran out. I saw the green sleeves on the king’s fingers when passing the paper,’ while another joked that ‘Viserys must be great at gardening with those green fingers.’

The chain of events that caused Viserys to lose his finger (which involved his dead skin being eaten by maggots) have caused some fans to re-open the theory known as the ‘grand maester conspiracy’.

According to fans of George RR Martin’s book series, the order of maesters working in King’s Landing secretly arranged for House Targaryen’s dynasty to collapse by the time of Ned Stark and Jon Snow.

The maesters are inhabit the Citadel in Oldtown – we saw Samwell Tarly briefly stay there during season seven of Game of Thrones. The Hightower family also originate from Oldtown, leading some fans to think they conspired together.

In the first episode, a maester is seen whispering to Otto Hightower (Rhys Ifans) before King Viserys is informed of the fatal turn that Queen Aemma’s (Sian Brooke) labour has taken.

Some fans have even suggested that the maesters and the Hightowers convinced Viserys that a C-section was the necessary choice to save his son, in order to kill Aemma and lethally injure Prince Baelon in one go.

And now some fans have gone so far as to theorise that the maggots used to treat Viserys’ fingers in the previous episode actually made the problem worse, resulting in Viserys losing the fingers once and for all.
