Joe Lycett has led reactions to Liz Truss being announced as the UK’s next Prime Minister following his chaotic appearance on Sunday With Laura Kuenssberg.

Ms Truss beat Rishi Sunak in the race to become leader of the Conservative Party, receiving a total of 81,326 votes from the Tory membership compared to Mr Sunak’s 60,399.

Following comedian Joe’s widely discussed appearance on the BBC’s new flagship politics show, in which he sarcastically declared himself ‘incredibly right-wing’ and jokingly applauded Ms Truss, he was quick to react to the news.

‘Yes @trussliz absolutely smashed it babe!!!’ he tweeted.

Money Saving Expert Martin Lewis called on Ms Truss to have a ‘speedy’ response to the cost of living crisis.

‘Congratulations @trussliz on your new role as Prime Minister,’ he said. ‘Right now, we need good, empathetic, speedy, responsible leadership to prevent crisis I (& I hope most) want to wish you all strength and judgement to do the right job, fit for the times, for UK people and the nation.’

The results were announced by Sir Graham Brady today after the contest began in July.

Ms Truss, currently the Foreign Secretary, will be promoted to PM tomorrow when Boris Johnson steps down.

She will get the keys to Number 10 and become the UK’s third female prime minister, following Margaret Thatcher and Theresa May.

Ms Truss will travel to Balmoral tomorrow where she will have an audience with the Queen and meet Boris Johnson for a handover of power.

She will then make an address to the country later in the evening to thank Tory party members for voting for her and set out her hopes for her term in power.

Joe hit headlines after his eventful appearance on Kuenssberg’s new show.

Asked by Laura about the strength of Liz Truss’ position at the moment, Joe reflected: ‘I think the haters will say that we’ve had 12 years of the Tories and that we’re sort of at the dregs of what they’ve got available and that Liz Truss is the backwash of the available MPs.

‘I wouldn’t say that because I’m incredibly right wing, but some people might say that.’

As Laura suggested that the ‘consensus’ in politics is often wrong, and we don’t know what’s going to pan out, Joe spoke about ‘predicting the future’.

‘As Liz said there, it would be wrong to predict the future – even though loads of people have predicted that we’re going to have real issues with paying our energy bills. But I think she’s right to say, “Let’s not predict and see what happens next week.” I think she did the right thing there!’

As Laura attempted to get him to drop his persona, she pointed out: ‘There’s a serious point, Joe. She suggested there’s a big package of help coming this week to hep people pay their bills’.

‘She was very clear what she said!’ Joe joked. ‘I think we know exactly what’s going to happen. You’re reassured, I’m reassured, are you reassured?!’

One other memorable moment saw Joe criticising the BBC’s interview with Rishi Sunak, as ‘he’s not going to be Prime Minister, so you may as well have interviewed Peter Andre.’
