Sky Sports presenter Jo Wilson has announced that she’s been diagnosed with stage 3 cervical cancer, with the disease having spread to two of her lymph nodes.

Jo – who has presented on Sky Sports since 2015 – was diagnosed this summer and is currently undergoing chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

She recalled crying upon first hearing the news, with her husband Dan – with whom she shares daughter Mabel, 23 months – also in shock.

‘I cried while a lovely nurse held my hand. Then I cried to Dan, and he was quite shocked because he didn’t really think it would be cancer. You’re desperately hoping there’s a chance it might not be,’ Jo told OK! Magazine.

She asked the doctor if she was ‘going to die’, but was reassured: ‘It’s very treatable and it’s very curable.’

Jo made the news of her diagnosis public during Gynaecological Cancer Awareness Month after going for a smear test in June, when a gynaecologist first spotted signs of cancer.

She was actually due to go for a smear while pregnant with her daughter, but endured a traumatic forceps delivery where both she and Mabel caught sepsis, so delayed getting her smear done.

Jo is now encouraging other women to get their smears done after initially missing hers, saying it’s ‘terrifying’ to think she could’ve put off the appointment for even longer.

‘I don’t want anyone to have to go through what I am right now.’

Jo also spoke about her anxieties around the treatment, with her diary now filled with hospital appointments rather than work shifts.

While there is said to be a 70% success rate, she still fears the 30% chance it might not work.

But, the host is ‘hanging onto the positives’ and has ‘everything in my favour’, such as her age and being fit.

‘The lack of control can be quite difficult, because the treatment will either work or it won’t. I’m trying to live in the present and get this through.’
