Autor Peter Straub, the horror author best known for books including Ghost Story and collaborating with Stephen King, has died aged 79.

His daughter Emma Straub, also a published author, shared the news on social media on Tuesday, announcing that he had died in New York on Sunday.

She wrote on Instagram, alongside a selection of happy family and career photos: ‘Peter Francis Straub, the smartest and most fun person in every room he was ever in, 3/2/43 – 9/4/22. How lucky we were.

‘There aren’t enough words in the world,’ she added.

Julia in 1975 was considered Straub’s breakthrough novel, when he tackled a paranormal theme for the first time.

His 1979 novel Ghost Story was turned into a film starring Fred Astaire and Alice Krige.

His biggest success, however, was as the co-author of The Talisman and sequel Balck House, with Stephen King.

‘It’s a sad day because my good friend and amazingly talented colleague and collaborator, Peter Straub, has passed away. Working with him was one of the great joys of my creative life,’ he wrote on Twitter.

The Sandman writer Neil Gaiman also paid tribute to Straub.

‘One of the best writers I’ve read, one of the best friends I’ve known. Always kind, funny, irascible, brilliant. Once performed the Crow position in yoga, in a Milwaukee WI men’s room, because he was fearless & proud of his yoga.’

‘I’ll miss you Peter,’ he added.
