ITV has suspended its planned programming to air an ITV News special until 7.30pm following news of the Queen’s ill health.

It was announced on Thursday afternoon that her majesty is under medical supervision at Balmoral, with the royal family rushing to be by her side.

ITV has followed in the footsteps of BBC One to disregard its planned schedule to focus its output on the Queen and all the latest updates, with presenter Mary Nightingale at the helm.

ITV News’ royal editor Chris Ship shared the schedule update on social media, writing: ‘Given today’s developments @itvnews will be on air for a special news programme at 5pm on @ITV with @nightingaleitv.’

During the ITV News Special, Chris and Mary reported the moment Prince William, Prince Andrew, Prince Edward and Sophie, Countess of Wessex arrived at Balmoral.

Meanwhile, political editor Robert Peston joined the programme live from Downing Street where he described a ‘deep anxiety’ in Westminster.

The Queen is said to be comfortable and royal physicians have recommended she stays under medical supervision.

Her son Prince Charles, daughter-in-law Camilla, and grandson Prince William have travelled up to Balmoral to be with her.
