This year’s Mercury Prize awards have been postponed

The Mercury Prize 2022 has been cancelled following news of the Queen’s death.

Queen Elizabeth II died peacefully at the age of 96 at Balmoral, ending her 70-year reign.

News of her majesty’s death came after it was announced on Thursday lunchtime that she was under medical supervision and ‘comfortable’.

In light of the news, the Mercury Prize will not go ahead as planned today, however will be rescheduled for a later date.

A spokesperson said in a statement: ‘Tonight’s Mercury Prize event has been postponed at this time of great national sorrow. We know everyone involved in the Mercury Prize will understand. 

‘Our thoughts and condolences are with The Royal Family at this very difficult time.

Queen Elizabeth II dead: Key details

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II has died after 70 years on the throne, with her death announced by Buckingham Palace on 8 September 2022.

She died at the age of 96 surrounded by her family at her home in Balmoral, including her son and heir to the throne Charles, the Prince of Wales, and her grandsons, the Duke Of Cambridge, Prince William and the Duke of Sussex, Prince Harry.

The annual awards were set to take place at London’s Eventim Apollo in Hammersmith on Thursday evening.

Harry Styles, Little Simz, and Sam Fender were among the 12 artists leading this year’s shortlist.

The ceremony was set to feature live performances from Sam, Simz, Fergus McCreadie, Gwenno, Jessie Buckley & Bernard Butler, Joy Crookes, Kojey Radical, Nova Twins, Self Esteem, Wet Leg, and Yard Act.

Former One Direction star Harry Styles was nominated with his critically acclaimed third solo album, Harry’s House, but he was not expected to attend due to his Love On Tour shows in America.
