Over the course of the Queen’s reign, a number of the UK’s top actresses tried their hand at playing the monarch, in a wide and wild variety of interpretations.

On Thursday September 8, after 70 years as a fearless monarch, Elizabeth II died peacefully surrounded by her family at Balmoral with the entire world in mourning.

Though the first 30 years of Her Majesty’s tenure were fairly free of portrayal of the monarch, she began to crop up on TV and film in the 1980s, in a mixture of comedy cameos and serious dramatic supporting roles.

This contrasting mixture of appearances has continued ever since, up to recent showings in both The Crown and – surreally – the Minions movie.
