AP McCoy has recalled a humorous interaction he had with Queen Elizabeth II in which he forgot Royal protocol

The Jockey, 48, appeared on Good Morning Britain on Saturday where he discussed his favourite memories of the late Queen, who was an avid fan of horse racing.

He remembered one occasion where he had joined the Queen to watch Royal Ascot – and got a stern look from her when he broke protocol by accident.

AP told Susanna Reid and Ben Shephard: ‘I remember once at Royal Ascot, I was once in the box next to the Royal Ascot box, the Ascot Authority box and a representative to Sir Johnny Weatherby asked me would I go in and watch some racing with Her Majesty and I thought, ok then.

‘So I did, I obviously went in and was sat down and watched the race or whatever and unfortunately a little bit of Irish came out of me and I forgot the Royal protocol and decided after the race that I would get up, and she looked at me as if to say “Have you got somewhere better to go?”’

He joked: ‘So she had a sense of humour as well. Obviously I sat back down again! But I thought like most people that she’d be bored of me after like five minutes.

Queen Elizabeth II dead: What happens next?

‘I did say “I thought you’d be bored of me by now so I thought I’d better go”, and she just started laughing.’

The Queen died on Thursday at the age of 96 at Balmoral, with the new King Charles III and Princess Anne by her side.

Other members of her family, including Prince William and Harry, had travelled to her Scottish home after the Palace released a statement telling the nation that the Queen was under medical supervision.

Concerns built after the initial statement, which came at lunchtime, until the Palace released a further statement at 6.30pm confirming the Queen had died that afternoon.

She had continued to work until the day before her death, including meeting with and appointing Liz Truss as Prime Minister of the UK on Tuesday.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV.
