Marsha Hunt, an actress who was blacklisted in Hollywood during the witchhunts for communists in the mid-20th century, has died at the age of 104.

The star, who appeared in films including Pride and Prejudice, Born to the West, Kid Glove Killer and The Happy Time, died on Wednesday September 7 from natural causes at her home in Sherman Oaks, California.

Her death was confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter by Roger C Memos, the writer and director of the 2015 documentary Marsha Hunt’s Sweet Adversity.

Tributes have been made to the late activist, who campaigned throughout her life to raise awareness of homelessness, world hunger, climate change and was a supporter of same-sex marriage.

‘Farewell to the glorious #MarshaHunt a lovely actress and finer human being. Condolences to her family and friends,’ one fan tweeted.

‘I met Marsha Hunt several times and she was one of the most genuinely delightful, thoughtful human beings I knew. Her strength of character was unmatched, she fought for what was right her whole life. We were just lucky to have her on this earth for almost 105 years,’ someone else said.

Roles came thick and fast for the actress throughout the 1930s and 1940s, with the star being featured in titles such as Desert Gold, Joe and Ethel Turp Call on the President and The Hardys Ride High.

The actress played Mary Bennet in the 1940 adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, alongside Greer Garson as Elizabeth Bennet and Laurence Olivier as Fitzwilliam Darcy.
