Frozen Planet II received a warm welcome as it aired on screens tonight with the Sir David Attenborough series praised for uplifting spirits following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

Episode one, titled Frozen Worlds, brought viewers to the continent of Antarctica where emperor penguin chicks found themselves abandoned by their parents and forced to cross the treacherous sea ice to survive.

The documentary also revealed the bizarre mating rituals of male hooded seals as well as the Siberian tiger prowling the far east forests of Russia

Viewers were thrilled to have Sir David’s wholesome series back on screens, particularly after the sombre tone of the past few days in light of the Queen’s death.

Buckingham Palace announced Her Majesty had died aged 96 on Thursday just hours with eldest children Princess Anne and the newly-appointed King Charles III by her side. It came just hours after the Palace released a statement explaining how doctors had become concerned for her health following an assessment that morning.

Showing gratitude for Sir David’s heartwarming programme, one viewer tweeted: ‘The Queen has died and there’s nothing more comforting than watching a David Attenborough documentary.’

‘The perfect medicine on the queens passing is watching sir David Attenborough . #FrozenPlanet2 the world will never be ready for his passing,’ another praised.

One viewer said: ‘Amongst all the sadness of  the last few days thank goodness we have David Attenborough,’ while another agreed: ‘Think we can all agree the country needed the soothing tones of Sir David to end the week.’

Another agreed: ‘After an emotional week, #FrozenPlanet2 is just what we needed… Even though it can be just as emotional!’

Referring to the Queen and Sir David’s friendship, another viewer commented: ‘Can’t help thinking of our late Queen as alongside David Attenborough have always been our National treasures of the same age.’

‘Blimey, #FrozenPlanet2 is just what we need. Remarkable viewing,’ one tweeted.

Sir David, 96, paid tribute to the late monarch last week, saying in a statement: ‘If there was a technical hitch, she wanted to know what it was, and if it had a funny side, she was quick to see the joke.

‘Yet not for one second could you forget that you were in the presence of someone who had willingly accepted enormous responsibility and dedicated her life to serving the nation – that you were, in short, in the presence of royalty.

‘The whole nation is bereaved.’

Announcing her death, Buckingham Palace said in a brief statement on Twitter: ‘The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon.

‘The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow.’

On Saturday, King Charles III was formally proclaimed in the first televised ceremony with his son Prince William, the new Prince of Wales, and wife Camilla, the Queen Consort, by his side for support.

The Queen’s coffin has now left Balmoral in Scotland and travelled to Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh where it will lie in state for two days, before making the journey down to London ahead of Her Majesty’s funeral on September 19.
