The trio manage to get through life off-camera unscathed – but when they’re filming? Chaos.

Jeremy Clarkson is quite baffled by the way in which he, and his The Grand Tour comrades James May and Richard Hammond, manage to get themselves into all sorts of sticky situations while filming, but are able to get through life away from the cameras unscathed.

The presenter was reflecting on the trio’s latest episode, A Scandi Flick, when May was involved in a terrifying crash that saw him need hospital treatment, after smashing into a wall at high speed.

Reflecting on the crash, with Clarkson labelling May ‘the slowest driver in the history of motoring’, the motorhead went on to question just how ‘when we are travelling individually or with our families, do we get from A to B without incident — but as soon as we are all together, all hell breaks loose and there are fires and smashed ribs’.

A worthy question, we have to say.

He wrote this week: ‘I know a lot of people think everything’s scripted but of course that’s nonsense. Sure, I could sit down and write a scene where James crashes into a rock face at 80mph, but James would take one look at the script and say, “Actually, no. I’m not going to do that.”

‘In much the same way that Richard would decline the offer to roll a jet car at 288mph, and then fall down a Swiss mountain in a burning supercar.’

While musing you can write a scene in which they may be chased by angry locals or greeted by people toting guns, he insisted this just isn’t the case when it comes to their series, adding in his column for The Sunday Times: ‘These things just happen, and we’re not really sure why.’

It comes after May reflected on his ‘horror’ crash in the latest episode of the series.

The 59-year-old was trying to reach the highest speed possible in a one-way tunnel in Norway, attempting to beat the scores of Clarkson and Hammond, when he slammed into a wall.

After exiting his smashed-up car, May was taken to hospital and was fortunately given the all-clear by medics, resuming his Nordic adventures in the upcoming The Grand Tour: A Scandi Flick.

Speaking to Metro.co.uk about the accident, the presenter said it ‘was the worst car crash I’ve ever been in.’

‘I haven’t really had any of significance,’ he explained. ‘I genuinely haven’t.’

He continued: ‘When I was a youth I was in quite a few car crashes that other people had where I was just a passenger.

‘There was one roll-over in the field, one quite big collision and another roll-over on a country lane, but I was never driving. It was always some stupid mate of mine who’d overdone it.

‘So that was the biggest one I’ve I’ve ever had. But it wasn’t that bad. To be honest, It was just a bit of a bang.’

Explaining he had ‘forgotten’ about the accident, May joked: ‘To be honest, I’d forgotten about it until somebody said, “People will ask you about your crash”. And then I thought, “Oh, yeah, it’s a bit more than a day ago so, you know, I’ve forgotten [about it].”‘

The Grand Tour: A Scandi Flick is available to stream on Amazon Prime on Friday, September 16.
