Paul Hollywood has warned Great British Bake Off viewers that the eliminations from this year’s competition will leave them devastated.

The 13th series of the Channel 4 baking series begins Tuesday and, despite Bake Off fans being used to have their hopes crushed (#justiceforjurgen), it appears we’re in for an even rougher time.

All four judges from last year’s competition are returning, with Noel Fielding and Matt Lucas presenting alongside Dame Prue Leith and Paul Hollywood.

And among them, Paul has promised viewers that the competition this year will leave viewers feeling heartbroken.

When asked how it will feel to see 11 of the 12 new bakers being knocked out of the competition, he said: ‘Of course [it will be devastating].’

He told The Daily Mirror: ‘You do get people on social media who feel so let down because you’ve got rid of their hero or they genuinely believed they were the best baker.’

He continued: ‘There was a couple of weeks where we had to sort of sit down properly and break things down to little faults that they may have had, which, in the end, sent them home. And it’s hard.’

He then added that the process of judging the competition is getting harder every year: ‘It’s getting really difficult. I don’t want them to make a mistake, it just makes our life easier if they do.’

The 13th series will be going ahead after all following fears from fans that the first episode would be delayed as a result of the changes to TV schedules following the death of Queen Elizabeth.

Among the 12 new contestants are a nuclear scientist, a music teacher, and a cardiovascular research consultant.

The average age of the contestants this year will be 35, which is five years younger than the average of 40 which set during 2021’s contest, eventually won by 45-year-old Giuseppe Dell’Anno.
