Jimmy Kimmel has been heavily criticised for lying on the stage during Quinta Brunson’s acceptance speech for best writing in a comedy series during the Emmy Awards 2022 with many calling for him to apologise.

The talk show host was dragged onto the stage by actor Will Arnett in a skit before announcing the nominees in the category.

However, Kimmel continued to commit to playing dead after Brunson was named the winner, prompting viewers to accuse him of being ‘disrespectful’.

After appearing on the stage, Brunson looked down at Kimmel to see if he would move.

‘Jimmy, wake up. I won. Jimmy?’ she said, but he didn’t budge, forcing her to press on with her speech with the comic lying by her feet.

Kimmel’s actions were fiercely condemned on social media, with one slamming: ‘If Quinta Brunson stepping over Jimmy Kimmel who literally laid in her spotlight on the day she won an Emmy isn’t a metaphor for what it means to be a WOC [woman of colour] in a white man’s world I don’t know what is.’

Another blasted: ‘Jimmy Kimmel should have left the stage during Quinta’s speech. Highly disrespectful.’

A third added: ‘Jimmy Kimmel owes my good sis Quinta an apology but even then, nothing can erase his foolishness tainting that experience for her. He ought to be ashamed.’

Brunson didn’t appear to be too bothered by Kimmel’s actions and speaking after her win said: ‘I don’t know. I know Jimmy Kimmel. The bit didn’t bother me.’

I hope Jimmy Kimmel gives Quinta Brunson the apology she deserves for trying to upstage her acceptance stage.

The choice to make Quinta Brunson step over Jimmy Kimmel to get to the mic and then play her off early was atrocious. #Emmys

Why was Jimmy Kimmel still lying on the stage during Quinta’s acceptance speech? It was weird, the whole skit, weird #Emmys2022

Jimmy Kimmel owes my good sis Quinta an apology but even then nothing can erase his foolishness tainting that experience for her. He ought to be ashamed.

She continued: ‘Honestly, Jimmy gave me my first big late night spot, he was one of the first people to see Abbott Elementary. He was the first person to message me on Instagram.

‘He was so excited it was going to be on ABC. I was happy it was Jimmy. He’s one of the comedy godfathers. Tomorrow maybe I’ll be mad at him.’

Kimmel has yet to publicly speak out on the matter, but as Brunson is set to be a guest on his show later this week, it’s likely the duo will talk about the moment then.
