*Warning: Contains spoilers for House of the Dragon and Game of Thrones.*
House of the Dragon continues to go from strength to strength.
The Game of Thrones prequel has quickly won over fans of the original series with a new set of enticing characters, including Princess Rhaenyra (Milly Alcock), King Viserys (Paddy Considine), and Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith).
The series is set nearly 200 years before the likes of Cersei Lannister, Jon Snow, and Daenerys Targaryen are born, at a time when House Targaryen is at its height and dragons roam the skies in Westeros.
As a result, several minor houses in Game of Thrones are big players in House of the Dragon. The Hightowers are part of the royal family, meanwhile the Velaryon family ride dragons as well.
Some of the major houses from Game of Thrones have smaller roles in the House of the Dragon story, including the Lannisters, the Starks, and one house who have yet to appear on screen despite numerous mentions.
That house is House Arryn.
What is the Vale in the Game Of Thrones series?

House Arryn are a noble house in Westeros. Based in The Vale, we are first introduced to them in the Game of Thrones pilot, entitled Winter is Coming. Jon Arryn, former Hand of the King to Robert Baratheon, is poisoned and we briefly see his funeral take place.
As the first set of episodes progress, Tyrion Lannister is wrongly arrested by Catelyn Stark and taken to the Eyrie, the most prominent castle in the Vale. Once there, we meet Catelyn’s sister and Jon’s wife, Lysa, as well as her frightening young son Robin.
After Tyrion is freed from the Eyrie, it takes a while for the Vale to become part of the story again. Littlefinger marries Lysa for political reasons before murdering her and staging her death as a suicide. He then commands the Knights of the Vale, who later help Jon Snow reclaim Winterfell from Ramsay Bolton.

At the very end of the story, the Vale is shown to be back under the control of House Arryn, with Robin, now much older and more level-headed, and his guardian Yohn Royce in control of the vast kingdom.
Who rules the Vale during the time of House of the Dragon?

With House of the Dragon set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, you would understandably expect the political situation in the Vale to be considerably different. But the truth is that very little changes in the Vale between the years of Targaryen might and the days of Ned Stark.
House Arryn bent the knee to Aegon the Conqueror during his conquest of Westeros and very little has changed since then. Several members of House Arryn and House Royce (another prominent family in the Vale) have married children of Targaryen kings in order to strengthen their alliance.

One such marriage has taken place already in House of the Dragon, with Daemon Targaryen married to Rhea Royce, whom he affectionately refers to as his ‘Bronze B***h’ at several points during the opening group of episodes. Rhea Royce has been cast for the series and will appear in the first season.
The Vale does become more heavily involved in the events that House of the Dragon will eventually cover, so keep your eyes peeled for some familiar names and sigils as the show continues.
What were the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros?

The Seven Kingdoms of Westeros are seven large areas of the continent of Westeros. Throughout ancient history Westeros was often divided, even having as many as 97 kingdoms at one point. Things have certainly settled since then.

The Seven Kingdoms are: The North, the Vale, the Riverlands, the Westerlands, the Reach, the Stormlands, and Dorne. At the end of Game of Thrones, the North secedes from the rest of Westeros and declares itself independent.
This may not happen in the events of George RR Martin’s remaining two novels in the A Song of Ice and Fire series, which is yet to be finished.
