The Great British Bake Off has spoken out after some fans questioned Sandro’s career, in the past after spotting that he supposedly sold a cake to Maya Jama for Stormzy’s birthday.

Last night, the most heartwarming baking show on telly finally returned for its 2022 series, as 12 new contestants entered the tent to showcase their best culinary skills for judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith.

Even though there’s only been one episode of the season so far, viewers already have their favourites, with Star Baker Junesz, Syabira and Sandro among the highest-ranked bakers so far.

While Sandro put on a strong performance in week one, serving up exquisite white rose mini sandwich cakes, earning the second place spot in the Technical and creating a delightful home-inspired Showstopper, his past baking experience has been called into question.

One person on Twitter appeared to recognise him on the programme, as they asked: ‘Is Sandro not the guy that Maya Jama bought a cake from for Stormzy’s birthday? Previously known as Sandro’s Cakery?’

It appears that in 2017, Sandro may have made a cake in honour of Stormzy’s birthday, which was presented to the rapper at his party by his then-girlfriend Maya.

A tweet from the account @sandroscakery, which no longer appears to exist on the platform, read: ‘What a pleasure to cater to the extremely talented @Stormzy1 with a 2 tier MERKY cake with an EDIBLE globe on top! Hope you enjoy!’ according to Capital XTRA.

The same account was tagged when Little Mix singer Perrie Edwards was presented with a cake for her birthday on stage in 2017, while musician Tallia Storm also marked her 18th with a cake by Sandro’s Cakery.

Bake Off stipulates that the competition is for amateur bakers, so people who apply to take part can’t have worked as a professional chef or baker at any time nor had their main source of income come from commercial baking.

In a statement sent to Metro.co.uk, the programme emphasised that Sandro meets the criteria to compete, despite appearing to have sold some cakes in the past.

‘There are strict criteria to take part in the show and Sandro meets that criteria. His livelihood does not derive from commercial baking or cooking in a professional environment,’ they said.

Following episode one, Sandro expressed how much his time on Bake Off meant to him, saying: ‘Last night wasn’t even imaginable for me.’

‘Thank you to everyone person who has supported me & the other 11 bakers, the love has been so received & I couldn’t have asked for a better response,’ he said.

‘Watching back literally brings tears, joy & so much laughter. Wishing I could be back there with all the bakers again.’

The Great British Bake Off returns next Tuesday at 8pm on Channel 4 and All 4.
