A woman has remembered the Queen for one of her many acts of kindness when she pooled all her resources to search for her relative’s missing grave.

Shona Finnie appeared on a special tribute episode of The One Show on Thursday, following Her Majesty’s peaceful death at Balmoral last week.

In it, presenters Alex Jones and Gethin Jones spoke to people whose lives had been touched by Queen Elizabeth II, Britain’s longest-ruling monarch.

Among them was Shona, who spoke about the Queen’s determination to locate her great-grandmother’s son’s grave, while she was still a Princess.

Shona said her great-grandmother was in poor health and her grandmother did not want her to die without knowing the final resting place of her son, who had been killed in the war.

Without expecting a reply, Shona said her grandmother sent a letter to the Queen and received a response from her Lady-in-waiting in a matter of days to her surprise.

Describing the letter as ‘beautiful’, Shona said that the gesture alone had warmed her family’s hearts, but they were even more shocked to open a follow-up shortly afterwards.

In the letter, Shona revealed the Queen had located her son’s grave, which was in Athens, and added lots of detail about the graveyard.

As well as finding the long-lost grave, the Queen said his grave had been marked with a wooden cross, but she had arranged to have that replaced with a stone plinth.

Shona added: ‘Only a few days later my great grandmother passed away as she had peace with where her son was.’
