Saoirse Ronan has revealed she was supposed to have a cameo in the upcoming Barbie movie alongside Margot Robbie but missed out due to other commitments.

The actress, 28, had been set to play another Barbie in the film, which is due in cinemas next year, but had to bow out as she was filming The Outrun in Scotland at the same time.

She told People: ‘I was supposed to do a cameo because I live in London and they were [filming] there.

‘There was a whole character I was going to play – another Barbie. I was gutted I couldn’t do it.’

Saoirse, who has worked with Margot – who will play the lead role – and director Greta Gerwig, several times before, including in Mary Queen of Scots and Lady Bird, was so keen to be part of the project that she even asked if she could just have a background role instead.

She added: ‘I have texted Margot and Greta and I’m like, “If you’re doing any pick-up [shots], maybe I can just walk through the background?”’

Ryan Gosling will play Ken in the upcoming flick (Picture: Warner Bros.)

Production wrapped on the Barbie movie in July and the cast, which also includes Ryan Gosling as Ken, enjoyed a star-studded party to celebrate.

Ryan recently teased some details about his version of Ken, telling ET Online: ‘Ken’s got no money, he’s got no job, he’s got no car, he’s got no house. He’s going through some stuff.’

The star also joked to Variety in a separate interview that he felt ‘seen’ as Ken, so fond is he of his doll counterpart’s wardrobe.

‘I felt like I was seeing myself. I felt seen,’ he recalled. ‘I think a lot of Kens will feel seen when they see this.’

Barbie will be released on July 21, 2023.
