Molly Kearney makes Saturday Night Live history as first openly non-binary cast member-Rishma Dosani-Entertainment – Metro

There will be some changes when Saturday Night Live returns next month for season 48, as Molly Kearney has now joined the team.

The comedian will be appearing beside Colin Jost, Kenan Thompson and a host of other huge names on the weekly NBC series.

The actor, who previously starred in Amazon’s A League Of Their Own, has made history on the program as the very first openly non-binary cast member, and uses they/them pronouns.

Taking to Instagram, they shared their official cast photo with fans, celebrating the news.

Alongside the brief clip, they penned: ‘MEATBRICK MOVED TO NEW YORK!!!!’

Fans and friends went wild for the announcement, flooding the comments below with love for Molly.

‘THE MEATIEST OF ALL STARS!!!!! love u bigger than the sun [sic],’ an Instagram user commented.

‘So so proud of you. Will stay up past my bedtime to watch you,’ another agreed.

A follower penned: ‘Oh my goodness!!!!! Congratulations can’t wait to cheer you on.’

‘Knew this day would come eventually!!!! Thanks for all the laughs over the years and can’t wait for the whole world to see now!!! Congratulations @meatbrickmolly,’ one said.

As a fan added: ‘No one deserves this more than you congrats.’

Molly isn’t the only new face on SNL, with Marcello Hernandez, Michael Longfellow and Devon Walker also joining the gang.

The program has been a long-running staple of the TV guide but season 48 will look a lot different, as Pete Davidson, Kyle Mooney, Aidy Bryant and Kate McKinnon left the show in a major shake-up.

Pete shared an emotional monologue during his final appearance in May, telling the audience: ‘I appreciate SNL always having my back and allowing me to work on myself and grow.

‘Thank you to Lorne [Michaels] for never giving up on me or judging me, even when everyone else was and believing me and allowing me to have a place to call home with memories that will last a lifetime.’

Saturday Night Live season 48 will kick off on October 1, on NBC.
