Naughty Boy has heaped praise on his ‘friend’ King Charles III and described him as ‘the most diverse’ monarch.

The 41-year-old producer took his first big steps in the music industry after receiving a £5,000 grant from the Prince’s Trust in 2005 – while also winning £44,000 on Deal or No Deal the same year – and he will forever be grateful to the King for supporting him.

Appearing on Friday’s episode of Good Morning Britain, he said: ‘I feel like we’ve got the most diverse king. Even seeing him how he approached the crowds, he’s united a nation that’s grieving.’

The star – whose real name is Shahid Khan – admitted the monarch calls him by his stage name, although he thinks that will changed now his friend has become King Charles following the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, on September 8 aged 96.

‘I actually love the way the King calls me Naughty Boy – of course, this was then, I’m sure it’ll change,’ he quipped. ‘Also, I’m from West Watford and I was born on a council estate.

‘You grow up thinking no one’s gonna shine a light on what I’m doing, but without that grant – that was my first point of, I might have a chance at this because someone believes in me.’

Recalling their first meeting, the DJ – who has worked with the likes of Beyonce, Emile Sandé and more in the past – admitted he bowed, but they have become more relaxed over time.

‘Definitely when I first met him, I did a bow because I met him with our now-Queen Consort Camilla. It was funny because I performed at Buckingham Palace for him at one of the trust dinners at Guild Hall and also at the Tate Art Gallery,’ he explained.

‘There was one time in the palace where I performed an Asian song, and I remember him referring to the Queen Consort as his “mehbooba”, which is a very romantic, loving way of addressing your lover.

‘He’s very cultured as well. I think we’re – as much as the Queen has been a loss – I feel like we’ve gained something as well. We’ve gained someone like the King, who I do consider a friend.’

Meanwhile, Naughty Boy wasn’t able to join other mourners in the UK following the Queen’s death, instead having to travel abroad for work – but he gave some insight into how the news has been received around the world.

He said: ‘I wanted to grieve with the country but I had to leave to go to Canada for the Toronto Film Festival. But even in Canada, there was so much love for our Queen.

‘What a great legacy, and what a historical moment we’re all going through. I’m just so honoured to know him and to be a part of the British Asian Trust as well.’

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
