Peaky Blinders fans will have to wait another two years before seeing the movie spin-off to the BBC series… but it is still ‘definitely happening’.

The crime drama, which stars Cillian Murphy, Tom Hardy, and Paul Anderson, came to a close earlier this year after six seasons.

Set between the two World Wars, the series follows the Peaky Blinders street gang in Birmingham and Murphy’s ambitious crime boss Tommy Shelby.

The series ran between 2013 and 2022, gaining an international audience and leaving a big mark on popular culture.

Now the show’s creator, Steven Knight, has promised that a Peaky Blinders film will be released in the future, but not until 2024 at the earliest.

‘The film is definitely happening. I’m writing the script at the moment, I am in the process of writing. As soon as that’s finished, we will go into production,’ he said.

Knight added that he couldn’t be happier to welcome Murphy, 46, back as gang leader Tommy.

Speaking to the Daily Star newsppaer, he said: ‘It is phenomenal [to know Cillian is returning] and he’s a phenomenal actor and human being.’

‘It’s fantastic to know he will be around for the film,’ which Knight says will contain a few ‘surprising new faces’.

Speaking to Metro.co.uk earlier this year, Knight said of the film: ‘I know what the story is and I’m writing at the moment. It’s a very specific story, that’s based on a true story from the Second World War and will be told in the “Peaky” way.’

Murphy spoke to Deadline about returning to the role, saying: ‘I’d be as excited as anybody to read a script. But I think it’s good for everyone to have a little break. That’s always a healthy thing, and then we can regroup.’

Knight admitted that he has been working on the possibility of keeping Stephen Graham on to work with him on the Peaky Blinders movie, stating: ‘It’s been brilliant [working with Stephen], and I want to keep him as part of it, going forward.’

Graham, 49, appeared in two episodes of the final Peaky Blinders season.

Peaky Blinders is available to stream on BBC iPlayer and Netflix.
