The Greatest Showman director Michael Gracey is making this year’s Sainsbury’s Christmas advert.

The acclaimed Australian filmmaker, who is best known for directing the musical featuring Hugh Jackman, has been hired to helm the supermarket chain’s festive commercial, with an insider spilling that it will ‘tug at people’s heartstrings.’

A source shared: ‘Michael has some magical ideas for the Sainsbury’s
advert. It’s going to tug at people’s heartstrings.

‘He has been casting for a diverse range of characters, including a
multi-racial teenager who will have the starring role.’

Sainsbury’s Christmas ads have long touched viewer’s hearts, but this year the supermarket chain hopes Michael will give them an edge over the festive season.

The insider continued to The Sun newspaper’s Bizarre column: ‘Michael
thinks he has what it takes to win the top prize for them again and will
be pushing a message of love and kindness in their advert.

‘He is one of the best directors in the business and everyone working on
the ad thinks they have something really special on their hands.’

Michael previously helmed Pink’s documentary, All I Know So Far, in 2021, and has claimed that the relationship between music and storytelling has always been ‘inseparable’.

The director explained: ‘At the end of the day, whether it’s a feature
length film or a three-minute song, you are putting emotions, ideas, and
a point of view into the world – and while film-making and song-writing
are different skill sets, they are fundamentally rooted in the ability
to tell your audience a story.

‘That was the heart of what I could bring for my first documentary –
what is the most powerful story to tell?’

Michael also directed Robbie Williams’ biopic Better Man, and previously shared that he spent several hours speaking to the Angels singer to get a feel for the direction of the biographical movie.

He told Deadline: ‘As for how we represent Robbie in the film, that bit is top secret. I want to do this in a really original way. I remember going to the cinema as a kid and there were films that blew me away and made me say as I sat there in the cinema, “I’ve never seen this before”. I just want the audience to have that feeling.’
