Idris Elba has said filming is complete for the eagerly-anticipated Luther film and it will ‘open the doors’ for the popular crime thriller.

Last November it was confirmed that the BBC series, which sees Idris star as DCI John Luther, would be given the big screen treatment and that filming had begun for an upcoming movie.

The plot of the film has been kept under wraps, but we do know Idris will be joined by the likes of Cynthia Erivo and Andy Serkis in the cast.

And while promoting his recent blockbuster Beast, Idris, 50, revealed that filming has wrapped on the project.

‘The Luther film, guess what, we have finished it and we have some finishing work to do on the movie but it’s nearly there,’ he told LadBible, saying they were all ‘really proud of it.’

When asked if there would be any unexpected returning characters the star didn’t elaborate.

However, he added: ‘The world of Luther as a television show and film is similar, but the film has [huge] scale.

‘We’re opening the doors and widening it so anything’s possible when you can do that.’

BBC crime series Luther began in 2010 before culminating in 2019 with its fifth and final series.

Idris has been awarded a Critics’ Choice Television Award, Golden Globe Award, and Screen Actors Guild Award for his performance as John Luther, and the series has also received 11 Primetime Emmy Award nominations.

Though filming has wrapped on the movie, a release date has not yet been announced.

Idris previously said he hopes the upcoming Luther movie will kickstart his own James Bond-style action film franchise.

Despite being heavily rumoured to replace Daniel Craig as 007, Elba has always publicly distanced himself from the role, saying that Luther is ‘[his] Bond’.

‘It’s incredible, it’s like graduating. The show ran a natural course, we did five seasons, each one of them shape-shifted but kept an audience captivated,’ he said during an episode of Jemele Hill’s Unbothered podcast.

‘The graduation point is where we get to take that Luther character and elevate him to the big screen with a wider spectrum of scale.

‘If you’ve never seen an episode of Luther you can still be invited into the first chapter of the film series, I’m hoping that this movie literally becomes my Bond, everyone talks about Bond but, for me, it’s Luther.’
