Lea Michele has embraced the persistent online rumours that she can’t read on her new TikTok account, making fun of the whole thing.

The Glee star recently made her triumphant debut as Fanny Brice in Funny Girl on Broadway but was shortly afterwards forced to skip shows due to ‘early signs of Covid’.

Amid her successful treading of the boards, which saw the actress live out her own dreams as well as those of her Glee alter-ego Rachel Berry, the 36-year-old star had hit back at the bizarre theory that she’s illiterate due to her busy childhood acting career.

Calling the rumour ‘sad’ as she ‘knew her lines every single day’ on Glee, Michele also suggested that the gossip wouldn’t have spread if she were a man.

‘I think often if I were a man, a lot of this wouldn’t be the case,’ she mused.

Now the star has taken it a step further – and funnier – with her second-ever TikTok video.

Posting the clip to the platform on Sunday, Michele filmed herself on the phone with real-life bestie Jonathan Groff, known for his work on Mindhunter and Frozen, as well as Broadway, where he first met her.

Greeting him with a ‘hi’, Groff is heard asking: ‘How is it?’

Michele then responds: ‘It’s amazing but wait, can you talk for a sec?’, with the tongue-in-cheek caption reading: ‘Calling Jonathan to read me the comments on my first TikTok.’

‘Lol 😉🤪😌,’ the actress wrote next to her post, with her fans lapping up her sense of humour.

‘This just made me like you 100% more,’ wrote one, while another added: ‘SHE’S SELF AWARE.’

‘LEA THIS IS WHAT THE PEOPLE WANTED THANK YOU!!!!’ exclaimed another.

Others couldn’t resist adding to the joke, with Kim Chi replying: ‘I can’t wait for you to hear the responses on this TikTok!’

She had opened her account with a Funny Girl inspired post where she duetted with another user on a section of her performing classic song Don’t Rain On My Parade.

Groff had been in the audience for Michele’s first night in the role of Fanny, where she reportedly received six standing ovations.

One related moment in the show that had drawn particular reaction on her opening night was Michele’s admission as Fanny that she ‘hadn’t read many books’ while growing up on Henry Street in Brooklyn.

The audience reportedly laughed and gasped, as it mirrored the persistent illiterate theory.
