Melanie Chisholm has said that all her Spice Girls bandmates are still ‘caricatures’ of the nicknames they were given in 1996.

Mel C, also known as Sporty Spice, was part of the UK’s biggest girl group alongside Geri Horner or Ginger, Mel Brown aka Scary Spice, Emma Bunton who is Baby Spice and Posh Spice, Victoria Beckham

The 48-year-old revealed that the reunion tour in 2019 reminded her that ‘there’s no getting away from’ their names in the band, as they still suit all their respective personalities.

Mel told Heat magazine: ‘When we were rehearsing for the [reunion] tour in 2019, there were just moments when – whether it’s our behaviour, or what we were wearing – when we went, ‘We’re just d******ds.

‘Because Mel B will be in leopard print, and I’ll be in me trackies.

‘Even just the way we behave – we are caricatures of our nicknames – there’s no getting away from it.’

She added: ‘If anyone ever doubted it or felt that it was a marketing idea, if you spent any time with us, you’d be like, “No, they literally are what they say on the tin.”’

The Wannabe singers were allocated their alter-egos after an interview in Top of the Pops in the prime of the band in the 90s.

Mel said she thought her own persona was based on her casual outfits and at the time, she never imagined that their roles in the group would last the test of time.

‘Obviously one of the great things is that we had our individuality and it appealed to so many different kinds of girls,’ she continued.

Mel admitted that her alter-ego as ‘Sporty’ spice was mainly due to her tracksuits, which she still loves to wear (Picture: Victor Malafronte/Hulton Archive/Getty Images)

‘But my nickname came more from the way I dressed.

‘It was just a silly thing in the front of a magazine, and I don’t suppose that the person who thought it up knew it would stick. In America, they didn’t know our names.’

Mel C reflected on how ‘petrifying’ she used to find Mel B and that Scary Spice summed her up pretty well.

‘Scary makes sense,’ she explained, ‘She is petrifying. I remember at times being on tour, and I am sure everyone has people in their lives when they hear their footsteps coming down the corridor you cower – that is how scary she can be. I love her.’

Mel C said as Emma will ‘always be the youngest’ member of the band, her title of ‘baby’ is as suitable as it was back in their chart-topping days.

However, Mel suggested that Posh Spice, fashion designer and David Beckham’s wife, Victoria is the least suited to her nickname.

She stated: ‘That is probably the one which rings the least true.’

While Geri is no longer the ‘bright ginger she was back in the day’, so Mel thought she has also outgrown the name.
